The film journalist hosts the show and shares the best anecdotes between the musical pieces. It’s quite special, as René has spoken with countless film actors, directors, and composers throughout his career.

What is your role at The CineMusic Experience?

“I am the host who provides the connection between the visuals, the orchestra, and the audience.

I introduce the film and the musical piece in a very lighthearted, friendly way. The beauty of this combination is that I first see the audience enjoying the stories, and then they are immersed in that powerful music.”

Were you immediately enthusiastic about CineMusic?

“I’ve been making television programs about film for over 35 years. In these programs, film music is always secondary, but in my experience of film and in the conversations I often have with people, that music is actually very important. So when I was asked to interpret the pieces the orchestra plays during The CineMusic Experience and tell something about the composers and the films, I thought that was great!”

Why is it so much fun to talk about film music?

“Over the years, I’ve interviewed composers like John Williams, Hans Zimmer, and Ennio Morricone quite often. The truly great composers of the last 25 years. And I spoke with the film directors. I’m always curious about the collaboration between the two.

One composer creates the music once the film has been completely shot. Another composer looks at finished clips and then starts writing. And Morricone is a composer who has the entire soundtrack finished before filming even starts. I love sharing those kinds of fun facts.”

Have you always had the ambition to be on stage yourself?

“No, that happened by chance. I hadn’t been making a film program for Veronica for very long when I was asked to host a premiere at the Tuschinski cinema. I had no idea if I could do it or if I’d dare to, but I just went for it. Because of that, I’ve been on stage talking about films and movie stars since I was 20th.”

How do you like being on stage?

“Well, I noticed the very first time that it comes to me fairly easily. Especially now that I have years of experience, I’m able to talk to a hall as if I’m talking to just one person; to you. This makes people feel involved and connected to what I’m saying very quickly. So, I’m not a presenter who recites neatly pre-planned texts and stands there ‘as the presenter.’ No, I’m someone who prefers to be among the audience. I do that once or twice an evening during a performance of The CineMusic Experience as well. I often go into the hall when I announce Schindler’s List. I take the audience into the story. I tell them that a powerful moment is coming. After my introduction, lead violinist Hester van der Vlugt plays a piece from the film. Even for me, that is a very emotional moment every single time.”

You’ve been doing this work for quite a long time. Are you still just as enthusiastic for every interview?

“Yes. I am incredibly curious; I always want to know exactly how something works and why. I see it as a gift that I have this job, that I can see films and often speak with the creators and the lead actors the very next morning. It’s wonderful. I still enjoy it just as much as I did 35 years ago. It’s no different with CineMusic. Last season, I worked on seven or eight performances. At the last show, I felt the same enthusiasm as at the first. During an evening like that, I am completely ‘in’ the performance, and I don’t think, ‘well, I have nothing to do for 6 minutes, let me check my phone’.”

What is the magic of The CineMusic Experience for you?

“That magic is hard to describe. During the last season, people from the audience told me afterwards that they were already moved when the orchestra played a piece from Forrest Gump. That was the very first song played that evening! You have to imagine watching the film footage while a large orchestra plays that beautiful music. That combination is so unique. And at the same time, you are engaging with your emotions, because the music evokes something, whether you’ve seen the film or not.”

Can you tell us something about the CineMusic orchestra?

“The orchestra is composed of highly professional musicians from the Metropole Orchestra, the Schönberg Ensemble, and a number of top students who are still in training but are already among the best in the field. Real quality is being offered.”

Which film has the music that touches you the most?

“I find Ennio Morricone’s film music for The Mission very beautiful. It’s a combination of supporting film music that draws you into the tension, and opera music by the choir making sounds as if you’re walking through a tropical rainforest during a heavy downpour. It’s so beautifully done. I find John Williams’ music very grand; he leaves almost nothing to the imagination because he supports everything with big musical emotions. Very beautiful, the orchestra is always wonderful, but you can hear the emotional scene coming four minutes before you actually have to cry.”

What are you looking forward to this season of The CineMusic Experience?

“What I really like is that, in addition to the greatest hits that everyone wants to hear, something new is always brought in. The initiators really push for that. They do this by including recent blockbusters in the program. Last year, the orchestra was already playing the music from Top Gun: Maverick while many people had yet to see the film! That’s possible because the orchestra works with its own arrangements. This season, music from new films has been added as well, such as Avatar and even an even newer blockbuster. That was also a reason for me to say ‘yes’ to this project quite quickly.”

René Mioch has joined The CineMusic Experience again this season.
