With her radiant smile and fantastic playing, she makes an impression time and time again. It’s time to get to know her a little better.

What is your role in the CineMusic orchestra?

“I am one of the violinists and I support our concertmaster Hester van der Vlugt with my enthusiasm and my violin playing.”

Sometimes you fill in for Hester and take on the role of concertmaster. How do you like that?

“When I get to fill in for Hester, I have to show leadership, as I’m in charge of the string section. During rehearsals, I then assist the conductor. And I get to play the solo. I really enjoy that extra responsibility and I learn a lot from it. I graduated two years ago and am now doing a master’s degree at the conservatory in The Hague. This is a great way to gain more experience.”

How old were you when you started violin lessons?

“I was about seven years old. I was already playing the piano, but my mother thought it would be a good idea to start violin lessons. In the beginning, the violin was actually too difficult for me. Fortunately, I had a very sweet teacher, so I enjoyed going to the lessons. I kept playing until I was seventeen. Then I developed tendonitis in my arm, which meant I couldn’t play for two years. That was a very difficult time for me. The violin had become so important to me.”

What do you find special about the violin?

“With the violin, you can express such a wide range of emotions. You can play not only Mozart or Beethoven with it, but also flamenco, for example. And I really like that.”

Did you always want to make this your career?

“Yes, this was my dream. I am a social person, so I enjoy it most when I work in an orchestra or when I play chamber music with others. Making music together makes me happy.”

How did you end up in the Netherlands?

“I didn’t enjoy the education in Spain that much and I wanted to see more of the world. I always liked the Netherlands because people here are so open to other cultures. In Utrecht, I was able to study with Liz Perry. She is the former concertmaster of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. Liz is truly fantastic. I’ve been living in the Netherlands for six years now and I’m doing the Performance master’s program at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. I’m being taught by Arisa Fujita, a wonderful Japanese violinist.”

Naturally, you love classical music. What do you listen to in your free time?

“I have a broad taste in music. I listen to a lot of film music and classical music. But also to flamenco music; I find that very beautiful. And jazz, which I also play a bit on the violin. And pop music…”

How did you end up in the CineMusic orchestra?

“I was called by a colleague of mine who plays viola in the orchestra. I know him from my studies in Utrecht. He was already playing in the CineMusic orchestra and let me know they were looking for more musicians. I applied immediately.”

What do you like so much about it?

“I like everything about this orchestra. I share the same love for music with my colleagues. We have fun on stage, which creates a lively energy that I think is also noticeable to the audience. I have many friends in the orchestra now. Everyone is also very professional. And then of course you have the show itself; the music and the film scenes, that combination is really great. My favorite moment in the show is when Hester plays the solo from Schindler’s List. She is a fantastic violinist. When she plays that piece, she takes you into the feeling of the film. At the end, there is a moment where everyone is silent as a mouse. Only then does the audience start clapping. It’s so beautiful!

When Hester isn’t there and I get to play the solo, it’s different. Then I do get nervous. You stand up, because you have to play with your heart. There is no sheet music in front of you… At the same time, I also know that I have a whole team behind me, and in front of me are the people from lighting and tech. So I am supported from all sides. That is a very special feeling.”

You also play in other ensembles, even Spanish ones. How do you combine that?

“I still visit Spain two to three times a year during the Christmas holidays and during the summer. Far too little! There I still play with the Philharmonie de Granada and I often participate in a few other projects during the period I’m there.”

If everything were possible, what would you still like to achieve with the CineMusic orchestra?

“Everyone within The CineMusic Experience works very hard to keep improving, every year, every project, every concert. That is important. I would like to expand the repertoire with even more composers. For example, the film Cinema Paradiso has very beautiful music. And I would like to add a bit more animation for the younger audience. If it could get even bigger, I would want to go to other countries with The CineMusic Experience. Many international musicians from Spain, Italy, and Portugal play in the orchestra. Then everyone can show how beautiful it is in their home country.”

If you have already visited one of The CineMusic Experience’s concert shows, you surely haven’t missed her: Ana Márquez is one of the regular faces in the orchestra.
